Let’s see where this goes
Hello. I don’t know how I want to kick off this, my latest attempt to start my own blog and personal website. But I do know this: I need to start somewhere.
I’ve been working as a web professional for the better part of the last 17 years. But I’ve never had my own personal, staked-out place to explore and share ideas with the world. I’ve started projects several times, only to have any momentum behind them stall. For any personal projects for me to succeed, it needs to be part of my routine. I’m very big on my routines. And it’s tough to carve out time to devote to new things, even things that are important to me, like having my own website.
I’m choosing to create my website with Kirby. Actually, this isn’t a new decision. I’ve known about, been a fan of, and have followed the efforts of the team behind Kirby for several years now. I first bought my license for Kirby 3 in December 2014, during which I was going through one of my many spells of I need my own website, dammit.
I want to implement as many IndieWeb techniques as I can on this site. I love the idea of content federation. Right now, it’s not the easiest thing to set up, but I have to keep in mind that this can be an ongoing process and not something that needs to be completely in place right of the gate. So it’ll be something I am constantly working on and playing with.
I have so many ideas on what I want to do with this site that it becomes overwhelming. It’s these desires, I think, that have stalled me so many times in the past. So I am going to take things one step at a time.
My first task with this site? Get a basic template set up for the most important pages of the site: journal entries, journal listings, homepage, and RSS feeds. I believe those are the bare minimum requirements for what I need to get this project going.
From there, I have many different types of content I want to publish on this site. And, honestly, it’s coming up with those different content types that I get the biggest dopamine hit when developing for the web.
The bottom line is, this is hopefully, finally, a beginning that will spark something that will actually last for me. Let’s see where this goes.
